Can I Get a 0% Loan for Solar, a Battery or a Heat Pump? The Warm Homes Loan Explained (Essex 2026)
With bills forecast to rise again in January, many Essex homeowners are asking how to pay for solar panels, a home battery or a heat pump without finding the full cost up front. On 18 October 2026, i news reported that a government-backed scheme offering low and even zero-interest loans for these upgrades is set to launch within weeks. Here is what we know so far. This guide is accurate as of 19 October 2026. If you would rather talk it through, call CPW Electrical Solutions on 07545 571230.
What is the Warm Homes Loan Scheme?
The Warm Homes Loan Scheme is the lending part of the government's Warm Homes Plan. It is not a grant paid to you. Instead, the government pays participating lenders a non-repayable grant of up to 20% of each eligible loan, and the scheme rules say that support must be passed on to you as a lower interest rate. The rules describe a cut of up to five percentage points on the lender's normal rate.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero told i news the scheme "will offer low-interest or zero-interest financing for home energy upgrades".
When can I apply?
Not yet. As of 19 October 2026, GOV.UK has not named the participating lenders or their products. i news reports that the launch has been delayed and is now expected after the Budget at the end of October.
What can the loan pay for?
The scheme rules list these measures, each with a maximum loan amount:
solar PV panels: up to £15,000
battery storage (on its own or with solar): up to £15,000
air-to-water heat pump: up to £20,000 (before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is deducted)
ground source heat pump: up to £35,000 (before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is deducted)
air-to-air heat pump: up to £10,000, but the rules say it only becomes eligible once MCS standards for it are in place
An EV charger can be included as part of a solar or battery installation, but not on its own. The charger and installer must be approved by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles. The loan will not cover insulation, replacement roofing or structural work needed before solar goes on.
Who can get a Warm Homes Loan?
The scheme is aimed at owner-occupiers and private landlords, and owners of several homes can apply for each property. There is no income limit. Instead, each lender will run its own credit and affordability checks, and some may ask for an Energy Performance Certificate. Loans must run for at least three years to get the reduced rate.
Can I combine it with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
Yes. The scheme rules say that if you get a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for a heat pump in England or Wales, you can use a Warm Homes Loan to cover the rest of the installation cost. Bear in mind that i news also reports the government is considering cuts to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, so check GOV.UK before you commit. See our earlier guide to heat pump grant cuts.
Does my installer need to be MCS certified?
Yes. Solar panels, batteries and heat pumps financed through the scheme must use MCS-certified products, fitted by an installer who is MCS certified for that technology. The job must be registered on the MCS Installation Database, and lenders will check this.
How can I get ready now?
get a written quote that sets out the cost of each item, so you can check it sits within the loan caps
check that your installer is MCS certified for the technology you want
keep an eye on GOV.UK for the list of participating lenders and compare rates before you sign
