Do Energy-Saving Plugs Work? Safer Ways to Cut Electricity Bills Before January (Essex 2026)

Energy bills are back in the headlines. On 15 October 2026 British Gas raised its forecast for the January price cap, and many Essex households are now looking for quick ways to cut their electricity use. Some are being sold cheap plug-in "energy-saving" boxes online, and when Electrical Safety First tested 13 of them, every one failed basic safety tests. Here is what the tests found and what really reduces running costs. It is accurate as of 17 October 2026. If you would rather talk it through, call CPW Electrical Solutions on 07545 571230.

How much are energy bills expected to rise in January 2027?

Ofgem's price cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026 is £1,723 a year for a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit. The average Direct Debit electricity unit rate is 26.32p/kWh, with a standing charge of 54.83p a day. The government has also removed VAT from household electricity bills for six months from 1 October, while 5% VAT stays on gas.

The next cap runs from 1 January to 31 March 2027, and the forecasts point upwards:

  • Cornwall Insight (30 September 2026): about £1,999 a year, a 16% rise.

  • British Gas (updated 15 October 2026): about £2,185 a year, which it rates as low confidence.

These are forecasts, not confirmed prices. Ofgem is expected to announce the January cap in late November. The cap limits unit rates and standing charges, not your total bill, and does not cover fixed tariffs or business contracts.

Do plug-in "energy-saving" devices actually work?

No. Electrical Safety First published an investigation on 1 October 2026 into 13 so-called energy-saving devices bought from AliExpress, Amazon Marketplace and TikTok Shop, sold with claims that they "stabilise voltage" and cut bills just by being plugged in.

None contained parts capable of delivering the savings claimed. Most held little more than a small circuit board powering an LED on the front, so they actually use electricity. Some appeared to contain a capacitor or filter, but these were fake and not connected to anything.

Are energy-saving plugs dangerous?

They can be. Electrical Safety First found that:

  • the plug pins on all 13 devices failed dimensional and mechanical strength requirements, so they could snap off inside a socket

  • some had no fuse or suitable protection, and others used a glass fuse in the mains circuit that could shatter

  • two devices effectively exploded during a short-circuit test

Near-identical devices were recalled in 2022. The marketplaces removed the listings identified, but the charity warns that similar products keep appearing.

If you have one, stop using it. If the plug is damaged, a pin has broken off, or the socket is scorched, do not touch it: switch off at your consumer unit and call an electrician. Warm sockets, burning smells, buzzing or repeated tripping are all reasons to get your wiring checked. An EICR shows the condition of your installation, and our electrical testing and compliance page explains the checks we carry out.

What actually reduces electricity costs at home?

What you can change is how much electricity you buy from the grid and when you use it.

  • Solar panels and battery storage. Solar generates your own electricity, and a battery stores it for the evening. A battery can also be charged on a cheaper off-peak tariff. CPW is MCS certified (NIC602214) and a certified Tesla Powerwall installer. Since 15 October 2026, new battery installations are designed to BS 7671 Amendment 4, which adds a new chapter on stationary batteries. See solar and battery storage in Essex.

  • Off-peak EV charging. A properly installed smart charger lets you schedule charging for cheaper hours. See our EV chargers, heat pumps and air conditioning page and our guide to EV charger earth rods and PME.

  • More efficient heating. Heat pumps and air-to-air systems can heat a home with less electricity than direct electric heaters. Compare the options in our heating cost guide.

  • Smart controls. Smart home controls make it easier to schedule heating and appliances. See CCTV, access control and smart home.

Before adding high-demand equipment, have your consumer unit, earthing and supply capacity checked so the new kit is safe.

What about businesses?

The price cap does not apply to business energy contracts. We carry out commercial and industrial electrical work across Essex, including solar PV.

FAQ

Will the price cap definitely rise in January 2027?

It is not confirmed yet. Ofgem is expected to announce it in late November 2026. The forecasts above are dated and may change.

How do I report an unsafe product I bought online?

Contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline, which passes reports to Trading Standards.

Are plug-in heaters safe to use this winter?

Buy from reputable retailers, plug heaters directly into a wall socket rather than an extension lead, and never leave them running unattended.
