Consumer units and electrical upgrades

A consumer-unit replacement should not be treated as a box swap without assessing the installation. Existing circuits, earthing, bonding, protective devices, circuit condition and previous alterations must be considered so that the quotation reflects any additional work required to achieve a safe and compliant result.

Where an older board or limited RCD protection is present, CPW can inspect the installation, explain the available options and define whether an EICR or targeted testing is appropriate before replacement.

Rewires and refurbishment projects

Rewiring is most successful when the electrical layout is agreed before finishes are installed. CPW can work from drawings or develop a practical room-by-room schedule covering sockets, lighting, switching, data, smoke alarms, heating controls, external supplies, EV charging and future renewable-energy requirements.

For occupied homes, phased or partial work may be possible, but the limitations, disruption and interface with the existing installation should be explained before work begins.

Fault finding

Electrical faults can have several causes, including damaged accessories, appliance leakage, loose connections, cable damage, moisture, incorrect alterations or a failing protective device. Fault finding is normally charged for the engineer time and testing required rather than a guaranteed fixed repair price before the cause is known.

Provide the exact symptoms, when the problem began, which circuits are affected and whether any building, plumbing or appliance work happened recently. Do not repeatedly reset a device that will not remain on, and do not open electrical equipment unless you are competent and authorised.

Landlords and managed properties

CPW can support landlords and managing agents with EICRs, remedial works, smoke and heat alarm upgrades, fault response, planned electrical improvements and certification. For larger portfolios, organise properties by address, access contact, occupancy status, required date and known electrical history.

Domestic electrical FAQs

Do you carry out small electrical jobs?

Yes, subject to location, access and availability. Provide a clear description and photographs so the work can be assessed efficiently.

Do I need an EICR before changing a consumer unit?

Not in every case, but adequate inspection and testing are needed to understand the existing installation. Where the condition is uncertain, there are signs of unrecorded alterations or several faults are suspected, an EICR can identify the wider issues before the replacement scope is agreed.

Can you install electrics in a garden room or outbuilding?

Yes. The design must consider the supply capacity, cable route, installation method, earthing arrangement, environmental conditions and the equipment that will be used in the building.

Will I receive certification?

CPW will explain the documentation applicable to the agreed work. New circuits, replacements and notifiable work may require electrical certification and building-control notification as applicable.
