Solar Panels and Battery Storage in Essex: Costs, 0% VAT and Export Rates (October 2026)

Solar and battery storage is one of the questions we get asked most often at CPW Electrical Solutions. Prices, export rates and tax rules have all moved this year, so here is a plain-English guide to where things stand on 15 October 2026. If you would rather talk it through, call our team on 07545 571230.

Is there still 0% VAT on solar panels and batteries?

Yes, for now. HMRC's VAT Notice 708/6 confirms that installing solar panels and electrical storage batteries in homes qualifies for a temporary 0% VAT rate until 31 March 2027. From 1 April 2027 the rate reverts to 5%, unless the government extends the relief.

The zero rate also covers a battery fitted to an existing solar system, and a standalone battery charged from the grid. If you have been thinking about it, the practical point is timing: installations need to be completed (not just quoted) in the relief period, so book a survey early rather than leaving it to the final weeks.

What is the Smart Export Guarantee and what are suppliers paying?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) means licensed energy suppliers pay you for surplus solar electricity you send to the grid. Rates vary hugely, and they change often.

Based on comparison sites that checked supplier pages in early October 2026:

  • Basic tariffs open to anyone typically pay from about 3p to 6p per kWh (for example, British Gas and EDF's standard tariffs at 3p, E.ON Next Flex and ScottishPower SmartGen at 6p, Octopus at 4.1p).

  • Fixed 12-month deals of around 13p per kWh are available from suppliers such as E.ON Next and EDF, but you generally need to take your electricity import from them too.

  • The headline rates of 15p to 25p are tied to systems bought and installed through that supplier, often with a battery, and some last only 12 months.

The best rate on paper is not always the best deal for you. Check the live rate on the supplier's own page, whether it is fixed or variable, and whether you must switch your import supply. You will also need an MCS-certified installation to register for SEG. CPW is MCS certified (certificate NIC602214) and NICEIC Approved (607863000).

How much does a home battery cost in 2026?

Published UK guides for 2026 put a fully installed home battery at roughly £3,500 to £5,500 for 5kWh and £4,500 to £8,000 for 10kWh, depending on brand, whether it is a retrofit, and whether an inverter needs replacing. These are indicative market ranges, not a quote. Your price depends on your consumer unit, cable routes and the system you already have. Ask for a written quote after a survey.

Is a solar battery worth it?

It depends on how you use electricity. A battery stores the solar you generate during the day so you can use it in the evening instead of exporting it for a few pence and buying it back at a much higher unit rate. That tends to suit households that are out during the day and home in the evening, or that have an electric vehicle or heat pump.

A battery is less compelling if you are home all day and use most of your solar directly, or if you are on a tariff paying a very high export rate. Some time-of-use tariffs also reward you for charging cheaply overnight and discharging at peak times. We will look at your actual usage rather than sell you the biggest unit.

Do new homes have to have solar panels?

The rules for new builds are changing. Updated Building Regulations (Approved Document L and the Future Homes Standard) are introducing a requirement for new dwellings in England to include an on-site renewable electricity system, which in most cases means rooftop solar. The guidance benchmarks the output against panels covering 40% of the ground floor area, but there is flexibility where that is not practicable. Batteries are not required. Check the current timetable with your local building control or the GOV.UK Building Regulations pages before you plan a new build.

This does not change anything for existing homes: you are not required to add solar, but you can choose to.

What should I ask a solar installer in Essex?

  • Are you MCS certified and NICEIC (or equivalent) registered? Ask for the certificate numbers.

  • Is the quote fixed, and does it include scaffolding, the consumer unit work and the export paperwork?

  • Who handles the DNO grid notification and the SEG registration?

  • Is the battery inverter compatible if I add an EV charger or heat pump later?

  • What insurance do you hold? (CPW carries £2m public and products liability.)

You can see our recent work on our solar and battery installation page, and we also fit chargers, heat pumps and air conditioning, so you can plan it as one job: see EV chargers, heat pumps and air conditioning.

Which areas do you cover?

We are based in Thurrock and work across Essex and East London. Check the full list on our areas we cover page.

FAQ

Can I get 0% VAT on a battery on its own?

Yes. A battery installed on its own, or retrofitted to existing solar, qualifies for the 0% rate until 31 March 2027, according to HMRC.

Do I need MCS certification to get paid for exports?

Yes, SEG registration normally needs an MCS-certified installation, which is why you should use an MCS-certified installer.

Will solar panels work in winter?

Output is lower in winter, but panels still generate on bright days. Your system size and roof direction matter more than the season for the annual total.

How long does installation take?

It depends on the roof type, system size and whether a battery and consumer unit work are included. A survey will give you a realistic timescale.
