Do Solar Panels Work in Winter? What New Figures Mean for Essex Homes (2026)
With the clocks back, fog warnings across Essex this weekend and bills forecast to rise in January, many homeowners in Thurrock, Stanford-le-Hope, Corringham and Upminster are asking the same thing: is solar worth it when the days are this short? New analysis published on 6 November 2026 suggests panels keep earning their keep through the darker months. Here is what the figures say, what they do not say, and how to get the most from solar this winter. Accurate as of 7 November 2026.
Do solar panels still work in winter?
Yes. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not heat, so they keep producing on cold days and, at a lower level, on bright cloudy days. Output is lower in winter, with shorter days and a lower sun, but it does not drop to zero.
According to Installer Online, Good Energy used the European Commission's Photovoltaic Geographical Information System (PVGIS) and found that 31.4% of annual solar generation can take place between November and March. That is close to a third of a year's output in the months many people assume are a write-off.
How much could solar save between November and March?
Good Energy says a customer with a 10-panel (4.75kW) system installed by Good Energy, on its own Solar Savings export tariff, could save up to £852.85 a year. Applying the 31% winter share to that maximum gives roughly £268 of savings linked to November to March generation.
Treat those as one supplier's best-case figures for its own installs and tariff, not a promise for every home. Your result depends on roof direction, shading, system size, how much electricity you use in daylight, whether you have a battery and which export tariff you are on. A proper survey of your roof and your usage is the only reliable way to estimate savings for your property.
Why does this matter for bills this winter?
The Ofgem price cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026 is £1,723 a year for a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit, with an average capped electricity unit rate of 26.32p per kWh. Ofgem is due to announce the January to March 2027 cap by 25 November 2026. Cornwall Insight's forecast of £1,999 is quoted in the Good Energy analysis, but that is a forecast, not an Ofgem decision.
Every unit your panels generate and you use at home is a unit you do not buy from the grid. Good Energy also reports a 69% year-on-year rise in domestic solar enquiries, and says 51% of UK adults told its researchers that recent energy price volatility linked to the Middle East has increased their interest in solar.
Is a battery worth adding for winter?
Winter's main challenge is timing: you use more electricity after dark, when panels are not generating. A home battery stores surplus daytime solar so you can use it in the evening instead of buying it at peak rates. It can also give backup during power cuts if the system is designed for it. Our post on NESO's winter outlook and battery backup explains more, and our guide to whether home batteries are about to get cheaper covers the timing question.
How can I get the most from solar panels in winter?
Use power while the panels generate. Run the washing machine or dishwasher in daylight where practical.
Store surplus for the evening with a battery, if you have one.
Get paid for what you export. Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments need metered exports and usually an MCS-certified installation.
Keep panels clear. Leaves, dirt and new shade from trees can reduce output on short winter days.
Should I install solar before VAT changes?
Solar panels and home batteries supplied and installed together currently carry 0% VAT. That is due to end on 31 March 2027, with the rate returning to 5% from 1 April 2027. Surveys, design and any network notification take time, so if timing matters to you, start early. Our Budget 2026 VAT guide has the detail, and is my home electrically ready? explains the checks we make first.
FAQ
Do solar panels work on cloudy or foggy days?
Yes, but output is lower. Panels respond to daylight, so they still generate under cloud, just less than in bright sun.
Is it worth installing solar in November?
Panels start generating as soon as they are commissioned, and the longest, most productive days follow in spring and summer. Whether it pays off for you depends on your roof, usage and tariff.
Do I need MCS certification to get paid for exports?
SEG suppliers usually require an MCS-certified installation. Check the terms of the tariff you choose.
