Air Conditioning and Heat Pumps in Essex: Costs, F-Gas Rules and Grants (2026)
Updated: 6 days ago
After several hot summers, more Essex homes and businesses are asking about air conditioning, and many are surprised that the same units can heat in winter. Here is a straightforward guide to costs, the rules, and what to check before you hire anyone. For advice, call CPW on 07545 571230.
How much does air conditioning cost to install in 2026?
Published UK pricing guides for 2026 put a professionally fitted single-room split system at roughly £1,500 to £3,500, depending on the guide and the brand. Multi-split systems serving several rooms are higher; one guide gives around £3,000 to £6,000 for two indoor units and £5,000 or more for four or more. These are market ranges, not quotes.
The price is driven by unit size, how many rooms, the length of refrigerant pipework, where the outdoor unit goes, and whether new electrical supply work is needed. A fair quote should include pipework, condensate drainage, commissioning and the electrical connection. Ask for it in writing.
Do I need an F-Gas registered engineer?
Yes. Air conditioning uses fluorinated gases (F-gases) as refrigerant. Anyone working on a refrigerant circuit must hold the right F-Gas qualification, and the business should be registered with an approved scheme. If a company cannot show you its registration, walk away.
This is also why you cannot legally fit a split system yourself. Portable units and self-contained units with no outdoor part are different, but a wall-mounted split with an outdoor unit needs a certified installer.
Which refrigerants are allowed now?
GOV.UK confirms that, from 2025, new "single split" systems containing less than 3kg of refrigerant cannot use F-gases with a global warming potential above 750. In practice, R-32 is the standard in new domestic units, and R-410A should not be specified for new single-split systems. Larger systems and some other categories are treated differently. Your installer should tell you which refrigerant the unit uses.
Larger systems also have leak-checking and record-keeping duties. Single splits are usually small enough to fall below the lowest threshold, but multi-split and commercial systems often do not, so ask who is responsible for logbooks and servicing.
Is air conditioning the same as a heat pump?
Most wall-mounted split systems are reversible air-to-air heat pumps: they cool in summer and provide heat in winter. That is different from an air-to-water heat pump, which feeds radiators, underfloor heating and hot water. If you want your whole home heated, ask us about that route. If you mainly want to cool a bedroom or office and take the chill off in winter, an air-to-air split is usually the simpler option.
Is there a grant for heat pumps?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is open in England and Wales and, according to Ofgem and GOV.UK, provides £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (check GOV.UK for the current terms). The grant is taken off your bill by an MCS-certified installer: you cannot apply yourself. Importantly, the BUS applies to air-to-water systems, not to air-to-air air conditioning units. Heat pumps (air source) also benefit from 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, per HMRC.
Does air conditioning need Building Regulations approval?
Often yes in some way. The refrigerant work falls under F-Gas rules. The electrical supply is notifiable work in homes under Part P, so it should be done by a registered electrician, with certification when complete. Energy efficiency (Part L) is mainly a concern in new builds, extensions and major renovations, where documented compliance and commissioning records matter.
Because we are NICEIC Approved (607863000) and hold £2m public and products liability insurance, you get the electrical certification as part of the job.
How much does it cost to run?
Running costs depend on the unit, how often you use it and your electricity tariff. Modern inverter units are efficient, so ask for the unit's efficiency rating and work out an estimate against your own unit rate. Pairing air conditioning with solar panels can offset daytime use, which suits summer cooling, because the sun that heats the house is also generating electricity. See our solar and battery installations.
What about businesses?
Shops, offices and server rooms need reliable cooling, and the F-Gas record-keeping duties are greater for larger systems. We can survey and quote for commercial premises across Essex and East London. See our full range on the EV chargers, heat pumps and air conditioning page, and check our areas we cover.
FAQ
Can I install air conditioning myself?
Not a split system. It involves a refrigerant circuit and a notifiable electrical connection, so it needs F-Gas qualified and electrically competent installers.
How long does installation take?
It depends on the system and the property, so ask for a timescale in your written quote.
Will it affect my electricity bill much?
It will add to it when used, but efficient inverter units use far less energy than the cooling they provide. Solar helps offset daytime use.
